Information literacy as the foundation for evidence-based practice in graduate nursing education: a curriculum-integrated approach.

Kaplan-Jacobs, S. (2003). Information literacy as the foundation for evidence-based practice in graduate nursing education: a curriculum-integrated approach. Journal of Professional Nursing 19(5)320-328.

This articles discusses some social implications and initiatives for integrating components of informatics into all core courses of a master's program at New York University Division of Nursing. The goal is to prepare the master's students seeking either a clinical, academic, or administrative role, the ability to be competent users of electronic information.

Social issues with informatics is huge. I no longer have a relationship with those persons involved in the violation of my privacy using the hospital computer network when I was a pt. They meant well, but violated my trust and respect. I think all nursing students undergrad and grad should take a course in informatics and understand the implications of the abuse of information.

Information literacy is a necessary tool to have and needs to be addressed while in a learning environment because when you are caring for patients, it is not the time to try and learn new software or programs.

I have found that many nurses I work with were not literate in current techology and in how to use technology to help in practice. This both slows down progress and reduces time spent with patients while trying to learn to use this new technology. Many patients truely do appreciate nurses knowing how to use technology to retrieve information on practice and appropriate treatment options. To reply to Laina, yes, I have found that with the new technology it does reduce anonymity. If someone wants to know what's going on with a college who's an inpt they can easily look this up- but it must be realized this is illegal and could result in firing or losing of RN licence.

Informatics is not going anywhere. It's here to stay. By understanding the legalities and ethical issues, nurses are able to protect their license as well as protecting the patient's rights.
